The Orchid Studio

This backyard oasis was designed and built in 2008, pre-dating the tiny house movement that soon followed. The owners desired a place to cultivate their creativity, care for their plants, and shelter occasional guests. Natural light is plentiful, allowing for the best possible light to study, sketch, and paint by. The owner’s orchid collection thrives in the cooler temps made possible by the shelter’s separation from the house.

Orchids do not have any fragrance, placing the evolutionary imperative of attracting a pollinator entirely on its appearance. Through study and drawing, this structure evolved as an orchid itself - enticing its owners to leave their home with the promise of meditative hobby that consumes them once inside. This retreat is a regenerative one for the owners, whose patterns give life to the building and complete their symbiosis.
